([Re]Envisioning the World in/from East Asia)

上世纪最后十年以来,人类学的民族志发现乃至社会科学的深刻反思,大多围绕新自由主义修辞影响的 “全球化”这一主题展开。全球化要么被视为一种既存条件,要么被视为一个批判对象(e.g., Appadurai 1990; Ferguson 1997, 2005; Tsing 2015)。然而,随着全球格局的迅速演变,这一条件正在受到全面挑战。

One of the defining features in the development of anthropology—and arguably in social science overall—since the late 1980s and early 1990s has been the emergence of novel ethnographic discoveries and profound theoretical reflections generated in the context of [neoliberal] globalization, either as an existential condition or as a subject for critique [e.g., Appadurai 1990; Ferguson 1997, 2005; Tsing 2015]. Nevertheless, the global landscape is rapidly evolving, and the existing state of affairs is being contested on various fronts. 


一方面,日益加剧的地缘政治紧张局势、民族民粹主义的兴起以及保护主义的强化,大大动摇了曾经备受推崇的“全球化理想”。如今,新自由主义修辞所承诺的互联互通、经济增长和全球治理正被削弱,全球体系呈现深刻的裂痕和不确定性。另一方面,这些动力也在催生新的跨境团结,并重新构想集体行动。在挑战传统全球化叙事的同时,这些动力也在推动全球合作。换言之,尽管旧的全球化话语可能在政治和文化剧变的压力下逐渐瓦解,但一个乃至多个新世界的愿景正在浮现。它们未必回归民族主义或各种“中心主义”,而是重新配置跨界的互助与团结。

On the one hand, increasing geopolitical tensions, a surge in national populism, and the intensification of protectionism are seriously challenging the once-celebrated “ideals of globalization.” The promises of interconnectedness, economic growth, and global governance that were central to neoliberal rhetoric are now being undermined, giving rise to deep fractures and uncertainties within the global system. On the other hand, these same dynamics are fostering new forms of trans-border solidarity, reimagining collective action, and promoting global cooperation in ways that challenge conventional narratives of globalization. In other words, while the older discourse of globalization may be crumbling under the weight of political and cultural upheaval, new visions suggesting alternative horizons—of one or multiple new “worlds”—are emerging. These do not necessarily lie in a retreat to nationalism or various “centrisms,” but rather in a reconfiguration of mutuality and solidarity across boundaries.


方兴未艾的东亚人类学以其批判性思考模式,希望在这一关头有效应对权力动态、身份政治和认识论挑战的变化。作为“认识论他者”,东亚人类学对世界秩序有不同的想象(Wang 2017),对其悠久的传统深感自豪,并深刻挑战了现有秩序。旧秩序的瓦解在多大程度上验证或挑战了某些人类学家提出的、主要受新自由主义修辞影响的“全球化”概念?在全球秩序转型的裂痕中,新兴的政治、经济和知识状况迫使人类学家重新审视其民族志和理论的充分性。我们不仅要考虑多重的“世界愿景”,还要反思这些愿景的产生条件。

Anthropology originating and thriving in East Asia thus serves as an exemplary mode of thinking to critically engage with the shifting contours of power dynamics, identity politics, and epistemological challenges at this pressing moment. East Asian anthropology significantly challenges the established order brought by an “epistemological other” that not only holds a different imagination of how the world ought to be organized [Wang 2017] but also takes immense pride in its long-lasting traditions. To what extent does the demise of the previous order confirm or challenge the conceptualizations of [neoliberal] globalization that some anthropologists have developed? Amidst the fractures of a transforming global order, emerging political, economic, and intellectual circumstances compel anthropologists to take stock and reassess the adequacy of their ethnographic and theoretical understandings—not only by considering various perspectives of “world vision” but also by reflecting on the conditions under which these visions occur.


基于这一紧迫议题,我们呼吁人类学家从历史、政治和社会维度,比较、分析和阐明“世界”如何在东亚被(重新)想象。我们不仅要关注知识分子和精英,也要关注普通人的日常生活。本次会议旨在探讨但不限于以下议题:

With this urgency in mind, we call upon anthropologists to compare, analyse and elucidate how “the world” has been [re]envisioned in and from East Asia across historical, political, and social dimensions, not only by intellectuals and elites but also in ordinary life. This conference seeks to explore the following questions [though not limited to them]:


  • 东亚多重“世界”愿景的历史与认识论构成。

  • The historical and epistemological constitution of diverse visions of “the world” in East Asia

  • 多重“世界”愿景如何影响并推动(地缘)政治的(重新)行动,包括人道主义努力、民族关系、区域合作和民粹主义。

  • The ways in which these differing visions of “the world” inform and promote [geo]political [re]actions, including humanitarian efforts, ethnic relations, regional cooperation, and populism.

  • 东亚国家的“世界”愿景与其他地区(如前苏联的国际主义或英美的新自由主义全球化)的比较分析。

  • A comparative analysis of the extent to which world visions from East Asian nations differ from those of other regions, such as the internationalism of the Soviet Union or the neoliberalism of Anglo-American globalisation.

  • 东亚社会普通人对“世界”的看法,以及这些看法如何塑造他们与他人的日常互动(如移民、商业伙伴)及其各种关系构建形式(如亲属关系、友谊)。

  • The perspectives of ordinary individuals in East Asian societies regarding “the world,” and how these perspectives shape their daily interactions with others [e.g., immigrants, business associates] and their various forms of relationship-building [e.g., kinship, friendship].

  • 不同阶级、民族、地区,以及在政治中心与边缘的尺度上,对“世界”的差异想象。

  • The differential envisioning of “the world” along the axes of class, ethnicity, and region, as well as across the scale of political centres and peripheries.

  • 因不同“世界”的愿景而产生的冲突协商过程。

  • The negotiation of conflicts arising from divergent world visions.

  • 我们也欢迎与会议主题不直接相关的研究提案。

  • Proposals not directly related to the major theme of the conference are also welcome.

 

会议将于2025年11月1日至2日在位于杭州的浙江大学紫金港校区举行,会后考察定于11月3日。我们期待您的专题小组提案或个人论文提案。您无需会员资格即可提交提案,参会后自动成为会员。本次会议仅限线下参与。为响应高水平开放的倡议,也为了东亚学者交流,我们循例主张参会同仁以英语为工作语言,兼顾其他东亚语言。

We look forward to receiving your panel proposals or individual papers for the 2025 EAAA conference, scheduled on1 and 2 November 2025 with the post-conference tour on 3 November 2025 at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China. You do not need to be a member of EAAA at present in order to submit a panel or paper; you will become a member automatically by attending this conference. The conference will be in-person only. To promote high-quality open-up and to facilitate communication among East Asianists, we follow the convention of using English as the working language, with limited accommodation of East Asian languages.

 

专题小组提案或个人论文提案,均需提供英文摘要。专题小组提案应包括3至4位参与者和一个共同主题;个人论文提案则仅需提交你的论文摘要。我们将在后续阶段将个人论文组织成专题小组。请注意,专题小组(尤其是涉及多个东亚地区参与者)比个人论文更有可能被接受。

Please submit either an EAAA panel proposal or an EAAA individual paper proposal, each requiring an English-language abstract. A panel proposal should include 3–4 participants presenting on a common topic, while an individual paper proposal consists of your paper alone. We will organize individual papers into panels at a later stage. Please note that pre-formed panels, particularly those involving participants from multiple East Asian regions, have a higher likelihood of acceptance than individual papers.

会议注册费为700元人民币,费用包括两次午餐、会议晚宴、场地租借和材料印刷费用。参会者需自行安排住宿。我们将提供交通和酒店信息,校园访客可能享有折扣,但参会者需自行预订。

The registration fee will be US$100 or CNY700 and will cover two meals, a conference dinner, venue rental, and printing costs. Participants are responsible for their own accommodations. We will provide information on transportation and nearby hotels, where campus visitors may be eligible for discounts. However, participants must make their own bookings.
