主题：抗战时期国民党投降行为分析 Reason for Treason

摘要：本讲座利用历史数据分析抗战时期国民党中投降将领的行为及其背后原因。Defections in wars are extreme forms of loyalty changes. What makes military officers betray their motherland to serve the invaders? Using a novel data set of career paths of over 2,800 high-ranked Nationalist (KMT) military officers in the Second Sino-Japanese War, we examine defection cases to the Japanese puppet regimes. Three findings emerge. First, the high-ranked KMT officers who were slower in career advancement were more likely to defect; thus, internal organizational recognition matters. Second, officers under-promoted compared to their schoolmates and townsmen were more likely to defect, thus peer comparison matters. Third, officers receiving military education in Japan –those prone to have more positive impressions and whose defected peers had faster promotion pace – were more likely to defect, thus external recognition matters.
