主题：Colonial Rule, State-building, and Enduring Antagonism

摘要：The legacy of colonialism continues to shape mass attitudes in former colonies, particularly towards their ex-colonial power. This article investigates how varying forms of colonial exposure contribute to persistent antagonism, focusing on the case of northeast China under Japanese rule during WWII. Leveraging an original, fine-grained dataset, we demonstrate that historical exposure to Japanese settlers—rather than more violent events such as wartime atrocities or armed resistance—has a more substantial impact on anti-Japan sentiments in contemporary China. Further analysis reveals that top-down ruling strategies, including state-building efforts and intensified indoctrination, play a crucial role in maintaining these public sentiments. These findings highlight the importance of understanding diverse colonial experiences in shaping long-term public attitudes and underscore the mechanisms through which states perpetuate these legacies.
