摘要:This research analyzes the ideas and practices surrounding “刚需/inflexible demand,” a vernacular concept that Chinese people draw on to refer to—and construct—a need for homeownership as an indispensable criterion for fulfilling dreams of urban citizenship. During twenty months of fieldwork in a low-end housing market at Nanjing’s urban periphery from 2013 to 2015, I conducted semi-structured interviews and participant-observation with a group of real estate brokers who specialized in selling properties to low-income families who are presumed to have an “inflexible demand” for a first home. The research, recasting “刚需/inflexible demand” as an ethnographic and analytical term, argues that China’s urban accumulation has been motivated by the formation of homeownership ideologies through which diverse actors—buyers, brokers, developers, and the government—negotiated and contested the meaning of homeownership in the country’s state capitalist market of housing. These ideologies expose homeownership as an affective, economic, and political entitlement constructed in relation to the regime of urban accumulation, the moral economy of housing, and the building of legitimacy for the developmental state.
