概要：The lecture offers analysis of the changing character of empire in the historical record.
1. Empires such as Rome and China were once worlds unto themselves.
2. After the Fall of Rome, imperial restoration did not take place, leading to the creation of a restless multipolar state system.
3. These states gained empires, but they were no longer worlds unto themselves, engaging instead in fierce completion.
4. This competition led to a struggle with nationalism, slightly present before 1914, and dominant from the end of the First World War until 1945.
5. The world polity after 1945 was structured by the great empires of the USA and Russia, both in their rivalry and in their impact on the South.
6. The United States retains imperial power, whilst states that have lost empires often suffer from dangerous nostalgia.

主讲人：John A. Hall ，麦吉尔大学詹姆斯·麦吉尔荣休教授、加拿大皇家学会院士，目前担任英国爱丁堡大学访问教授。研究专长包括帝国、民族主义、战争、国际关系、资本主义和现代社会思想。著作包括 Sociology of Literature (Longmans, 1979), Diagnoses of Our Time (Heinemann, 1981), Powers and Liberties (Blackwell, 1985), International Order (Polity, 1996), Is America Falling Apart (Princeton, 1999), Ernest Gellner: An Intellectual Biography (Verson, 2010), The Struggle for Political Decency (Princeton, 2013), The Paradox of Vulnerability (Princeton, 2017), What Capitalism Needs (Cambridge, 2021) 等，另有多篇论文发表在 Daedalus, American Journal of Sociology, British Journal of Sociology, Sociological Forum, Nations and Nationalism 等国际顶刊。
主持人：赵鼎新，浙江大学社会学系系主任、教授，芝加哥大学Max Palevsky 荣休讲席教授。研究领域包括政治社会学、社会运动和历史社会学。中文专著有《社会与政治运动讲义》、《东周战争和儒法国家的形成》、《民主的限制》、《合法性的政治》以及《国家、战争与历史发展：前现代中西模式的比较》，研究成果主要发表在《美国社会学杂志》、《美国社会学评论》、《社会力量》、《社会学视角》、《中国研究季刊》以及国内出版的《社会学研究》等刊物上。英文专著《Power of Tiananmen》由芝加哥大学出版社出版，获美国社会学学会2001年度亚洲研究最佳书籍奖以及2002年度集体行动和社会运动研究最佳书籍奖。英文专著《The Confucian-Legalist State》由牛津大学出版社出版，获美国社会学学会2016年度政治社会学研究最佳书籍奖。
