讲座大纲:

This article examines the transformation of labor organizations in China between 1996 and 2015 and explains how the contradicting “new workers’ movement” was incrementally built. I coin the term “interstitial labor publics” to depict a sphere that is less penetrated by state institutions and develop a framework for analyzing the dynamics of labor activism within it. I argue that the type of labor activism emerging out of the sphere is contingent upon the interplay between the organizational structure of the sphere and its ideological structure; A proactive, class-based movement is not likely to rise unless an ideological power network that encourages the discussion of class issues entwines a group of movement mediators, who are capable of promoting the exchange of information between workers’ community and the wider public. Quantitative and qualitative data on labor activism in three different contexts is used to illustrate the framework.
