Abstract:

Recent investigations have highlighted that capturing and steering capital into financial markets depends on a large extent to chains of intermediation, and that a substantial number of financial professions are focused on performing intermediation work. A significant aspect of this work is impression management, which requires finance professionals to capture the attention of their audiences and persuade them to direct capital flows into specific projects. In this sense, intermediation processes and impression management are different from marketing, as they emphasise a direct and personal relationship between specific intermediaries and their audiences. With the increased complexity and technologization of financial markets, intermediation may require under particular circumstances professional collaborations with experts from outside the financial domains. How do such collaborations impact intermediation and to what extent do we see hybridisations between financial expertise and other types of expertise? How do such hybridisations impact intermediation? This talk examines these aspects based on two cases of professional collaborations: that between computer engineers and financial intermediaries, and that between media professionals and financial intermediaries.
