概 要:How are different sets of scientific knowledge mobilized, integrated and co-produced in interdisciplinary collaborative research? Prior studies, with the aim of unpacking this epistemic operation, almost exclusively focus on the particular shared body of knowledge as a common ground or boundary work between scientific researchers in an interdisciplinary team. However, little is known about other sets of knowledge, often regarded as incommensurable, less inter-disciplinary and less critical, in facilitating the whole collaboration process. This work proposes a holist approach to understand both aspects of knowledge production that make an interdisciplinary collaborative research work. Findings are based on a multi-method research on three interdisciplinary teams at a German University. Two kinds of interfaces that scientific researchers deploy to establish and maintain the the interdisciplinary team are identified: one is disciplinary interface for incorporating interdisciplinary findings into their respective disciplinary knowledge and credit systems; the other is interdisciplinary interface providing trans-epistemic connection and integration. The relationship between these two kinds of interfaces evolves with the process of interdisciplinary collaboration. In doing so, this paper provides an alternative view on knowledge integration by illustrating the dynamical epistemic structure of the boundary work between disciplines. These results may help policy makers and funding agencies to better assist and assess interdisciplinary collaborative efforts.
